Rapêh: What is it and how is it used?

What is Rapêh?
Rapêh (pronounced "Ha-peh") is a fine, powdered herbal preparation that has been used for millennia by indigenous tribes of the Amazon basin . It consists of sacred mixtures of various plants, traditionally used in ceremonial and healing contexts.
The basis of most Rapêh mixtures is tobacco (Nicotiana rustica) – a far stronger variety than the cigarette tobacco we are familiar with. This is combined with various medicinal plants, tree bark, seeds, and ash. Each tribe has its own recipes, often passed down through generations and considered sacred.
The tradition behind Rapêh
For the indigenous peoples of Brazil and Peru, rapêh is far more than a plant powder. It is a tool for connection – to nature, to the ancestors, to their own inner wisdom. Tribes such as the Yawanawa, Kuntanawa, Nukini , and many others create their own mixtures, each with a specific effect and intention.
In shamanic tradition, Rapêh is used for:
- Energy cleansing – removal of “panema” (stagnant, negative energies)
- Grounding and centering – especially before ceremonies or in times of unrest
- Meditation and focus – clearing the mind and opening the third eye
- Heart opening – certain mixtures work specifically on the heart center
- Connection to the plant world – as a means of communication with plant spirits
How is Rapêh traditionally used?
Traditionally, Rapêh is administered using a Kuripe (self-applicator) or Tepi (by a second person). A small amount is blown into each nostril. The moment of application is intense – the plant's powers work immediately and profoundly.
Note: In our shop, we offer Rapêh exclusively for burning on charcoal . This method allows you to experience the energetic and aromatic properties of the plant blends in the room – as incense for meditation, cleansing, and ceremonial use.
Our Rapêh blends at a glance

A cleansing and earthy blend from the Nukini tribe with the Lorino tree from the Amazon. This tree is said to cleanse, open, and aid digestion.

Frequently asked questions about Rapêh
Is rapêh legal?
Yes. Rapêh is legally available in Germany and the EU. It consists of traditional herbal mixtures.
How do I use Rapêh as incense?
Light a charcoal briquette and place it in a fireproof container filled with sand. Wait until the briquette is glowing evenly (about 5 minutes). Then sprinkle a small amount of rapêh (smoke) onto the briquette. The rising smoke will purify and invigorate the room.
Which mix is suitable for beginners?
We recommend Lorino or Alfavaca as a starting point – both are mild to medium strength and have a clear, approachable effect. Those seeking a more intense experience can begin with Tsunu.
How do I store Rapêh correctly?
Store in a cool, dry place away from light. Properly sealed, Rapêh retains its effectiveness for a very long time. Moisture is its greatest enemy – it can cause the powder to clump.
What do the different tribes mean?
Each tribe has its own traditions, its own plants, and its own way of producing Rapêh. The tribe names – Yawanawa, Kuntanawa, Nukini – refer to the origin of the mixture and thus to a specific energetic quality and tradition.
With respect and gratitude
Rapêh is sacred plant medicine. We source our blends directly from the tribes, supporting their way of life and the preservation of their culture. Each blend is made with love and in connection with the plant spirits.
When you use Rapêh – whether as incense or in another context – do so with respect, awareness and gratitude for the tradition behind it.
